Pikey Peak, Nepal

2022

In 2020 I was all set to conquer the Three Passes trek, a 3-week hike through the Khumbu region that includes a side trip to Everest Base Camp. When COVID-19 hit, my flights were cancelled and the expedition was put on hold. It wasn't until the end of 2022 that I had the opportunity to attempt the trek. My husband, Danny, was also keen to visit Nepal, but with his poor lungs we had to find a low-altitude option for him. Pikey Peak, a new hike in the same region, was the perfect answer. Our trip was booked: beginning in Dhap, we would climb Pikey Peak before joining up with the classic Jiri-Lukla trekking route. Danny would accompany me all the way to Namche Bazaar, the busiest village in the region. From here, Danny would return to Kathmandu while I continued on to complete the Three Passes circuit. It looked good on paper, but things don't always work out the way they are planned.
